Tips for Refrigeration Maintenance
Refrigerators are great appliances, but they do require maintenance. When things go south, it’s stressful. Here are some tips to maintain your fridge in the longterm.
Clean Coil
The coil sits at the bottom of the fridge. You can buy a coil brush online or at a department or hardware store. Slide it carefully back and forth beneath the fridge. Make sure not to go too far or you may damage the coil.
Inspect the Gasket
The gasket is the rubber seal around the inside of the refrigerator door. Open the door and inspect the gasket for unevenness or tears which may be letting heat in. Apply petroleum jelly to minimize friction on the gasket and lower the risk of tears.
Ice Cream Test
You want the freezer and fridge to be only as cold as necessary. If it’s running very cold for a long time then you will shorten the lifespan of the fridge. Put a pint of ice cream in the freezer, and adjust the temperature one degree at a time until it’s the consistency you like.
With these tips, you can expect your fridge to last. Make sure to also check the water filtration system in your home and replace it every year. For more complicated problems, call local refrigeration services for professional help.
